Who Makes Your Lunch?
Published by Rick Rumford December 2nd, 2008 in Leadership, problem solving.I was listening to the Dave Ramsey show on the radio last week and his guest, best selling author Dan Miller, made reference to an old Peanuts comic strip that I thought was interesting. In the strip, Charlie Brown is complaining to his friend Linus about having the same boring bologna sandwich for lunch everyday. Linus asks Charlie Brown who makes his lunch and Charlie Brown hangs his head and replies “I do.”
The comic really brings home an important truth – we are responsible for where we are at in life today. There is really no one else to credit or blame. Whether we are happy or disappointed with our current situation, the person in the mirror is the only one who is truly responsible.
Many of us get stuck in a pattern of passively following old habits. What worked for us in the past may not be working for us today. In a very real sense, we may go along on autopilot, failing to consciously examine our daily actions – which are often the subconscious decisions that are a product of long habit.
So, are you making your lunch? Are you consciously making the decisions that impact your daily life or are you stuck in a negative or nonproductive pattern of “going along.” When we are stuck in a negative pattern it is often because we are not making conscious decisions about our situation. And of course no decision is a decision to continue doing what you have always done.
So, if you are unhappy with where you are at, make a different decision and do something to change the situation. And just like Charlie Brown, you are making your own lunch.
